A brief announcement for anyone in the area: What: A demonstration and leafleting outside a Hall of Fame induction ceremony of the Essex Catholic High School Foundation. Essex Catholic High School was located in Newark and East Orange, NJ, and closed in 2003. When: Friday, November 16, 2012 from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM. Where: On the sidewalk outside the Chandelier Restaurant, 340 South Franklin Avenue, Belleville, NJ. Who: James O’Gara, formerly of West Orange, NJ and a graduate of the class of 1986, who was abused nearly every day of his high school life at Essex Catholic High School by Principal Brother A. Thomas Hewitt, CFC. O’Gara will speak publicly about his abuse for the first time; Dr. Robert M. Hoatson, Co-founder and President of Road to Recovery, Inc., a non-profit charity that assists victims of sexual abuse and graduate of the class of 1970, who was sexually groomed by teacher Br. S. Anthony Ferro, CFC; Samuel Rivera, Angel Nieves, and Miguel Nieves who are survivors of sexual abuse by Fr. John Laferrera of the Essex Catholic class of 1965. The Archdiocese of Newark recently settled six cases of abuse by Laferrera for more than $300,000.00; and supporters, relatives, and friends of the victims. Why: The Essex Catholic Foundation is attempting to keep the memory of Essex Catholic High School alive despite the fact that the school was closed by the Archdiocese of Newark in 2003. Numerous requests have been submitted to the leadership of the Essex Catholic Foundation for support of sexual abuse victims and they have refused to help survivors and victims of the following abusers: 1) Br.
